Gastronomy
Gastronomy is something for which Istria, and certainly Sveta Nedelja, is widely known. The flavours of the Mediterranean, fresh fruits of sunlit fields are just a drop in the sea of gastronomic delicacies of this region, which include fresh fruits and vegetables, and fish from the blue depths, as well as meat products from green pastures. Anyone who spends even a few hours in Istria will agree that Istrian food is something to remember.
In winter, hot maneštra, a thick soup with vegetables and dried meat, is usually an introduction to the main course of bura dry-cured sausage, ombolo (pork loin), and sauerkraut with warm bread from the bread oven. Wild asparagus, a sign that the Istrian spring has begun, is combined with fresh local eggs in a specialty that is locally called fritaja sa šparugama (asparagus frittata), and at this time the prosciutto is almost dry and good on the pan "đira volta", or a handful of fish species that are in season in spring – original Adriatic cuttlefish and squid on risotto or under the "peka" (backing bell) will not leave indifferent those with a sweet tooth. In summer, the strong sun shines on fertile fields and gives us juicy fruits, such as cherries, watermelons and plums, and vegetables, like the perfectly red tomatoes with a flavour that can only be created in the Mediterranean sun, and explodes on the palate. Autumn and the decreasing heat of the sun bring the fruits of this colder period, figs and chestnuts, and the beginning of the season of the fish švoj or sole, and the unstoppable harvest of grapes and a sweet, enchanting drink called young wine. But the real king of the Istrian autumn is the white truffle, a mushroom that grows only in this part of the world and which gives a special touch to every dish and makes bedrooms... hot!
You will not and cannot go home hungry!
